Shillong: Residents of Meghalaya should prepare for ongoing power disruptions as the state attempts to modernize its failing electricity infrastructure. Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh confirmed on Friday that frequent shutdowns are unavoidable while the government works to stabilize the grid.
The interruptions are a direct result of large-scale upgrades conducted under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme and various other network expansion projects. Lyngdoh explained that these maintenance tasks require lines to be de-energized to ensure the safety of workers, making it impossible to avoid service gaps while the grid is being overhauled.
While residents have expressed frustration over the erratic electricity supply, the Minister framed the outages as a necessary step to address long-standing issues in the state's power sector. He noted that the backlog of infrastructure repairs and the addition of new household connections have made the transition period particularly challenging.
Regarding concerns over poor communication, Lyngdoh stated that the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited maintains standard procedures to notify affected areas before power is cut. He urged the public to remain patient as the department works through the current infrastructure projects, though he provided no specific timeline for when a more reliable power supply might be expected.
