Meghalaya Opens First Cold Storage Facility for Fish and Livestock in Shillong

Shillong: Meghalaya launched its first specialized cold storage facility for fish and livestock in Mawblei, Shillong, on Friday. The site offers a 45-metric-tonne capacity for chilling and freezing to help local producers establish a more efficient supply chain. By providing reliable storage, the facility expects to reduce post-harvest losses and keep products fresh for farmers and fishers.

The North East Development Initiative (NEDI), part of ABK Media India Pvt Ltd, leads the project in partnership with local firm J. Mawkhiew Enterprises. Officials attending the launch included Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department David Khanwanlang, Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department Dr. A. Chyne, and proprietor Jenny Mawkhiew.

NEDI and the state Fisheries Department also announced a proposed five-year partnership. This agreement aims to improve infrastructure and support long-term development in the region. NEDI founder Somjit Dutta described the project as a foundation for broader community growth, focusing on entrepreneurship, youth engagement, and capacity building.

Twelve distributors from across the state attended the inauguration. The project plans to grow its network to include nearly 35 sub-distributors, ensuring the infrastructure reaches districts across Meghalaya. Organizers hope to eventually establish the state as a major national hub for fisheries and livestock production.
