Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet recently approved a One-Time Settlement scheme designed to provide financial relief to local transporters and commercial vehicle owners. The policy aims to address the accumulation of substantial debt caused by unpaid Motor Vehicles Tax, Passenger and Goods Tax, and vehicle fitness fees.

State officials explained that while base tax rates are manageable, the compounded penalties have created a significant burden for those relying on these vehicles for their livelihoods. Under the new guidelines, vehicle owners are eligible for a 90 percent exemption on penalties related to overdue fitness certificates. Additionally, the government is offering an 80 percent reduction on penalties for outstanding Motor Vehicle Tax and Goods and Passenger Tax.

This initiative is intended to help operators clear their debts and return to normal financial operations. The government expects the move to improve long-term regulatory compliance across the transport sector. Vehicle owners have until August 31, 2026, to take advantage of the settlement window and finalize their payments.
