Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the Skillerate 2026 initiative in Tura on May 21, marking a significant step in the state’s effort to build a future-ready workforce. During the event held at Holly Hocks, the Chief Minister distributed PROPEL startup toolkits to 798 beneficiaries. He also issued 34 work orders valued at over 16.59 crore rupees under the Skills Meghalaya and State Capability Enhancement and Human Development Mission, which will provide training to 4,830 youths throughout the Garo Hills region.

Highlighting the growth of the state's skilling ecosystem, Sangma noted that Meghalaya has enrolled more than 58,000 candidates across various sectors. Of these, 28,000 individuals have received training in 22 different fields. The government has also supported over 19,000 young people in self-employment ventures and secured placements for 3,200 candidates both within and outside the state. Additionally, 5,000 trainees have already received startup tools to help them launch independent businesses.

Data shows that between fiscal years 2019 and 2025, the state created over 3.6 lakh livelihood opportunities by investing in entrepreneurship and market connections in areas like agriculture, hospitality, and food processing. Sangma emphasized that training is only effective when paired with mentorship, tools, and access to actual markets. The Chief Minister stated that the state aims to train 30,000 more candidates during the 2026 fiscal year, with a specific focus on improving placement outcomes and equipping the youth with modern, relevant skills.
