Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced a suspension of all new foreign travel for state government officials. This decision follows a recent appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for states to practice fiscal restraint and reduce overseas visits.

Sangma explained that any trips currently underway or recently completed were finalized months before the Prime Minister's announcement. These previous delegations received necessary political clearances from the central government, with travel arrangements, bookings, and financial commitments already secured well in advance.

The Chief Minister confirmed that his administration has adopted a strict policy since receiving the new directive. He has personally blocked seven to eight fresh travel proposals that reached his office after the Prime Minister spoke on the matter. Sangma noted that he acted immediately to halt these activities even in the absence of a formal notification, emphasizing that the move is in the interest of the nation.
