Meghalaya Groups Urged to Secure Voter Rolls

Shillong: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations wants a clean voter list. Chairman Roy Kupar Synrem told residents to watch the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. He thinks this check protects the political future of indigenous people. It is not just another chore.

Groups fear non-genuine voters could infiltrate the system. Illegal immigration and demographic shifts remain top worries for local leaders. The revision process acts as a filter. Officials will use it to pull out dead voters, duplicates, and those who do not belong. Synrem warned that the accuracy of these records dictates the health of local democracy.

Traditional bodies like Dorbar Shnongs and Nokmas hold the most power here. They can spot fraud at the village level. Synrem urged these leaders to stay sharp during the verification cycle. He stated, "The purity of the electoral roll forms the foundation of democracy, and any compromise in the voters’ list weakens the legitimacy of the democratic process."

Political parties must drop their rivalries for this project. The goal is to keep indigenous citizens on the list while blocking the ineligible. CoMSO demands total cooperation from the public to get the job done right.
