Meghalaya Government to Address Border Fencing Concerns with Centre

Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has pledged to address the concerns of villagers living near the India-Bangladesh border regarding the ongoing fencing project. Residents in areas like Lyngkhong have voiced opposition to the current alignment, which is positioned approximately 150 yards from the zero line. Villagers fear this placement will leave their homes and vital agricultural land on the wrong side of the security barrier.

Tynsong emphasized that the state supports the necessity of border security. During his remarks, he stated, "The people of the state are not at all against the fencing. Border fencing is a must and it is very necessary." Despite this support for the project, he acknowledged that the current layout poses significant practical challenges for local livelihoods.

The state government plans to formally request that central authorities adjust the fence location closer to the zero line where possible. This modification would ensure that inhabited areas and farms remain within the protected zone. Officials are expected to engage with the federal government in the coming days to seek a resolution that balances national security requirements with the welfare of border communities.
