Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched a series of major urban development projects in Tura on Friday. The initiative, valued at approximately Rs 150 crore, aims to modernize the town’s infrastructure, civic amenities, and public spaces ahead of the 2027 National Games.

Key projects include the Rs 60.76 crore redevelopment of Najing Bazar, which will feature upgraded commercial spaces, dedicated vendor zones, parking facilities, and hotel accommodations. Additionally, a Rs 51.21 crore complex in Dakopgre will offer multi-level parking for 200 vehicles, three cinema halls, a food court, and a gaming zone to help reduce local traffic congestion.

The government will also refurbish the SMELC building to house a new Art and Culture Promenade, a museum, a children’s park, a youth center, and an Active Ageing Centre. Beyond physical construction, the town will see improvements to urban safety through the installation of LED street lighting and CCTV cameras. Officials also introduced local waste management initiatives and the new Tura Municipal Board mobile application.

During the event, the Chief Minister promoted the CM Connect initiative to improve government accessibility. He announced plans to establish CM Connect offices across all 56 blocks in the state to digitize services and provide a streamlined process for public grievances. Local artists also received support through the distribution of sanctions under the CM Artists Engagement Scheme.
