Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma ordered a fact-finding committee to investigate controversies surrounding a public hearing for a proposed Shree Cement facility. The announcement came Tuesday during a legislative session in Shillong. Lawmakers debated a 10-point charter submitted by Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
Sangma defended the potential project. He noted that Shree Cement stands as the second-largest producer in India. The government wants economic growth. Bringing outside money into the state remains a priority for job creation.
Some citizens fear for their land. Sangma brushed off accusations that the state is selling itself out to outsiders. He promised that industrial growth would not ignore environmental safeguards or local interests.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that public hearings occasionally draw participants from outside the immediate districts. He insisted that the government intends to follow all legal procedures. "Investment does not mean bypassing rules," Sangma said. The new committee will now examine every concern raised by stakeholders to ensure the process remains fair.
