Shillong: Meghalaya election officials have issued 6,43,439 notices to clean up state voter rolls. Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari confirmed that 4,78,217 of these notices reached residents. Another 1,65,222 notices remain pending. The department identified 6,51,644 total electors during this verification phase.
Mapping discrepancies account for 4,28,858 cases, while 2,22,786 voters faced no mapping issues. Authorities have finished 62,343 hearings so far. This reflects 9.69 per cent of the total workload. Officials found 194 people ineligible after these hearings concluded. Tiwari assured the public that the process remains transparent. He stated, "No name appearing in the draft electoral roll would be deleted without notice, inquiry and a fair opportunity of hearing."
Residents receiving notices should submit documents to clear up errors. Since the draft roll publication on August 5, the office received 5,576 new applications. This count includes 2,690 inclusions, 240 deletions, and 2,646 correction requests. Eligible voters not on the draft roll have until September 4 to submit Form 6. The window for claims and objections stays open until October 3. Officials plan to publish the final roll on October 7.
The Shillong Parliamentary by-election follows this work. The seat became vacant after the death of MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon. The bypoll schedule depends on the completion of the roll revision, which should wrap up by October 10. The Election Commission of India will release the specific election dates once these administrative tasks finish.
