Shillong: Election officials in Meghalaya have flagged 384 ineligible voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. State Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari confirmed the findings on Tuesday following 2,08,870 hearings. This audit covers roughly 32 percent of the 6,51,735 total notices sent out to residents.
The Election Commission pushed the deadline for filing claims and objections to September 18. This gives voters extra time after civil unrest in Shillong slowed down the process. Final hearings will wrap up by October 17, with the official roll set for publication on October 21. The state currently lists 21,69,243 electors in its draft document.
Officials sent notices to 6,51,735 people due to no-mapping errors or other discrepancies. Out of these, 6,20,730 notices reached their targets. Tiwari made it clear that getting a notice does not signal immediate removal. He stated, “A notice is an opportunity for the elector to clarify the issues and furnish the required documents.” No names disappear without due process.
Voters can update their details via Form 6, Form 7, or Form 8. Authorities have already logged 12,951 claims and objections. Residents only need one valid document like a birth certificate, passport, or school record to clear up mapping issues. Those submitting Aadhaar must provide one additional proof of identity.
Political parties have assigned 1,814 agents to monitor the revision. Officials also pledged extra support for senior citizens and people with disabilities. If a resident disagrees with an ERO decision, they can file an appeal with the District Election Officer.
