Shillong: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar guaranteed that every Indian will be included in the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision in Meghalaya. He made the pledge in New Delhi on July 19. The ECI chief addressed concerns about non-citizens crossing the border to register. He refused to detail specific tactics to block foreign nationals.
Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh. Much of the line is fenced, but migrants frequently use the state as a transit point. This remains a security headache. Alleged killers of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi recently fled into India through this route. Senior politician Salahuddin Ahmed was also discovered wandering in the Golf Link area of Shillong in 2015 after disappearing from his home country. He stayed for nine years before returning.
Kumar addressed the first All India Media Conference 2026. He argued the system operates under the Constitution and strict electoral laws. He insisted on the integrity of the data. "I guarantee that not even a single Indian would be left out of the electoral roll," he said. The national list currently covers nearly 95 crore citizens. A massive force of 12 lakh booth level officers and 15 lakh booth level agents monitors the rolls around the clock.
