Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the Skillerate 2026 event in Tura on Thursday to boost local entrepreneurship and job opportunities. During the program, the state government distributed work orders valued at more than Rs 16.59 crore along with essential start-up tools to help beneficiaries begin working independently.

Organized by the Department of Labour, Employment and Skill Development alongside the CM Skills Mission, the initiative addresses feedback from youth who felt that training programs lacked the necessary follow-up support. Sangma explained that the government is now focused on moving beyond just classroom training by providing equipment, market linkages, and employment assistance to ensure graduates can sustain their livelihoods.

The Chief Minister noted that while Meghalaya is currently one of the fastest-growing economies in India, this progress must reach individual households and entrepreneurs. He linked the effort to the CM Connect program, which allows citizens to voice their needs directly to the administration.

Looking toward future education initiatives, Sangma announced plans for new specialized colleges in the state. A new institution for Agriculture, Horticulture, and Food Processing is scheduled to open in Williamnagar by 2027, and a Veterinary College is planned for the Ri-Bhoi district. These centers are intended to act as hubs for innovation, research, and disease control to support the state’s agricultural sector.
