Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has called for a shift toward outcome-oriented policing, emphasizing that the success of the force should be measured by crime reduction and public safety rather than infrastructure or recruitment figures. Addressing senior police officials during a conference in Tura on May 21, Sangma stated that hiring 3,900 personnel is only meaningful if it leads to lives saved and safer communities.
The Chief Minister encouraged leaders to use the ongoing Senior Superintendent and Sub-Divisional Police Officer conference as a space for open dialogue regarding operational hurdles. He stressed that modernizing the department requires a focus on intelligence gathering, behavioral sciences, and the integration of advanced technology. To support this growth, he suggested that officers participate in exposure visits to major metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Delhi to study successful urban policing models.
During the meeting, officials evaluated the progress of previous reform recommendations, including improvements to cybercrime response and infrastructure modernization. Participants also explored ways to bolster institutional capacity and service delivery. Sangma concluded the session by tasking leadership with clearing pending administrative decisions and urged better coordination between the Home Department and police brass to ensure timely action on policy matters.
