Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for a new building at PASF-Abong Noga College in New Tura this Friday. The project, which also included the inauguration of a new college conference hall, is funded by an 8 crore rupee contribution from Dorf Ketal Chemicals India Ltd. as part of a corporate social responsibility initiative. The company has already released an initial 5 crore rupees following an agreement signed in November 2025 between the P. A. Sangma Foundation, the company, and the Ira Gurukul Educational Trust.
During the event, the Chief Minister honored the vision of the late Purno Agitok Sangma, who founded the institution to prioritize youth development and academic growth. The Chief Minister shared personal reflections on the early struggles to sustain the college and thanked the donors for their transformative investment. He highlighted that Meghalaya is currently the third fastest-growing economy in India, with nominal growth exceeding 15 percent.
Addressing the broader educational landscape, Sangma noted that the state government allocates roughly 13 percent of its annual budget to the education sector. He emphasized that the government is focusing on both expanding access and improving the quality of instruction. Recent efforts include a structural pay reform for 23,000 teachers, which represents an annual commitment of 800 crore rupees. He encouraged students to focus on character development and service as their primary goals.
The PASF-Abong Noga College was established in 2022 and is affiliated with North-Eastern Hill University. It operates as a People’s College under the state's Grant-in-Aid scheme. The institution is named after both the late P. A. Sangma and the legendary figure Abong Noga, reflecting a dual commitment to preserving regional cultural heritage and promoting higher academic standards.
