Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party President Conrad K. Sangma has issued an urgent appeal for the immediate release of civilians held hostage in Manipur. Sangma wrote to the leaders of the Kuki Inpi Manipur and the United Naga Council following reports that six Naga men and fourteen Kuki civilians have been in captivity since mid-May 2026.
Sangma emphasized that the abductions cause profound suffering for families and deepen existing divisions between communities. He stated that mothers, children, and elderly residents are currently living in constant fear and uncertainty due to these tensions.
The NPP chief called for the unconditional release of the hostages on humanitarian grounds. He urged those holding the captives to ensure their safety, provide necessary medical care and nutrition, and allow the individuals to communicate with their families. Sangma maintained that the long-term challenges facing Manipur require peaceful dialogue rather than violence or kidnapping.
Reaffirming his party's commitment to human dignity, Sangma encouraged all stakeholders to prioritize reconciliation. He stressed that the region's youth deserve a future defined by opportunity and peace rather than conflict.
