Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the Matchikolgre area of Tura on May 23 for an MLA Connect programme. The event allowed him to hear directly from residents, youth groups, and community leaders about local challenges regarding roads, drainage, sanitation, and public utilities.
During the discussion, locals explained that waste collection vehicles often struggle to reach neighborhoods during the rainy season due to slippery roads. In response, Sangma instructed the Tura Municipal Board to implement temporary solutions. He also indicated that the government will look into using four-wheel-drive vehicles to maintain consistent waste management across difficult terrain.
The Chief Minister addressed several other community needs as well. He promised to examine the poor state of a local primary school, which currently lacks basic facilities like water and electricity, and pledged support for youth organizations seeking to build basketball courts and promote cultural activities. Regarding complaints about high electricity bills following the installation of smart meters, energy officials explained that new billing reflects actual usage rather than previous estimates. A team will visit the area on Monday to review any potential billing errors.
Sangma also acknowledged requests for shared water supply facilities for families who cannot afford individual connections and promised further consultation with relevant departments. As part of his visit, he urged the public to participate in the ongoing economic census to help the government provide better targeted welfare for low-income families.
