Shillong: The second edition of SILK LINK concluded in Shillong this week, marking a push to modernize Meghalaya’s Eri silk industry through clean energy and innovation. Organized by the Customised Energy Solutions Foundation, the Department of Textiles, the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency, and the Clean Energy Access Network, the two-day event focused on sustainable growth within the silk value chain.
The program kicked off with field visits to Sohkyrbam and Warmawsaw villages in Ri-Bhoi. Stakeholders evaluated solar-powered irrigation systems for castor plantations and climate-smart rearing rooms. These renewable energy tools aim to boost agricultural productivity while minimizing the physical labor required by local farmers and spinners.
Following the field visits, a state-level workshop at the MIIT Hall brought together officials from the Central Silk Board and the Department of Sericulture and Weaving. Participants explored strategies for cluster-based development, improved spinning technology, and the creation of revolving fund mechanisms.
A primary result of the conference is the formation of an Action Learning Working Group. This committee will oversee regular collaboration among partners to drive the sector forward. Nitin Akhade, director of the CES Foundation, emphasized that the initiative connects artisans and farmers with energy solutions to foster women-led livelihoods and regional economic stability.
