Shillong: Meghalaya has generated over 3.6 lakh livelihood opportunities between the 2019 and 2025 fiscal years. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma shared these figures at the Skillerate 2026 event in Tura, attributing the growth to targeted investments in skill development, entrepreneurship, and market access.

During the event, the government distributed over Rs 16.59 crore in work orders and start-up tools. These resources support the Skills Meghalaya and Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya initiatives, which aim to train nearly 5,000 people. Officials provided equipment to 798 beneficiaries working in fields such as automobile repair, plumbing, agriculture, and mobile phone maintenance.

Sangma emphasized that training is only the first step toward self-sufficiency. He noted that many skilled individuals fail to launch independent careers because they lack essential tools or connections to the market. By providing these resources, the state hopes to build confidence and long-term economic stability for its young population.

The government plans to build on this momentum by training another 30,000 people in the 2027 fiscal year. This effort will focus on improving placement rates and ensuring workers are prepared for modern job markets. Labour Minister Methodius Dkhar added that these programs are vital for helping residents turn their potential into meaningful careers as the state continues to be one of India's fastest-growing economies.
