Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP is shaking up its strategy. With the 2028 Assembly elections looming, the party plans to ditch its role as a junior coalition partner. It wants to stand alone. Recent moves show the party is recruiting regional heavyweights to bolster its ranks.
Former UDP leader and ex-MLA Jemino Mawthoh recently appeared at a party event. He spoke to workers, triggering rumors of a jump to the saffron party. While no official deal is done, senior leaders expect his arrival soon. This follows a high-profile visit from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the Behdienkhlam Festival in Jowai. It is a clear push to extend the party’s reach.
Senior leader AL Hek confirmed the shift in direction. "The party will not enter into any pre-poll alliance and intends to contest the next Assembly elections on its own strength."
The BJP holds just two seats in the 60-member Assembly. It currently sits within the NPP-led government. Party bosses want to copy the dominance they built in Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. They are now working to lure local leaders across the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills. The party must now prove it can win without the help of the NPP or other regional allies.
