Shillong: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma is currently in Ottawa for the 16th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar. Running from May 25 to 29, 2026, the international event gathers legislative leaders to discuss how institutions can innovate and adapt to the challenges of the 21st century.

The seminar program covers a wide range of topics, including the future of artificial intelligence in government, electronic voting, and the use of hybrid proceedings. Attendees will also examine ways to increase youth engagement, support women in political leadership, and navigate the influence of social media. The discussions aim to strengthen government accountability and improve modern legislative infrastructure.

Speaker Sangma is joined by Malthus S. Sangma, Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and Deputy Secretary Raja K. Kharpuri. Officials hope the trip will provide the delegation with insights into global best practices that can eventually be implemented to improve legislative functioning back home in Meghalaya.
