Meghalaya Assembly sets five-day autumn session for August

Shillong: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will meet for a five-day Autumn Session from August 24 to 28. The Business Advisory Committee reached a unanimous agreement on the schedule on July 31. The session includes three days for government business and two days for private members to bring forward motions, bills, and resolutions.

Speaker Thomas A Sangma chaired the meeting alongside Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Leader of the Opposition Mukul M. Sangma, Opposition Chief Whip Charles Pyngrope, and Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma. Despite concerns regarding the short duration, the Speaker pledged to prioritize fairness. "I will try my best to accommodate all the members concerned and ensure that every member gets an opportunity to express their concerns on the floor of the House," the Speaker told reporters.

Proceedings begin August 24 with the committee report, new ordinances, and the presentation of Supplementary Demands for Grants and the Supplementary Appropriation for 2026-27. August 25 and 27 are set aside for private members. Lawmakers will vote on grants August 26. The final day features the passage of the Meghalaya Appropriation (No. III) Bill, 2026, and potential adjournment.
