Meghalaya Speaker pushes for tribal scholarship funds in Delhi meeting

Shillong: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma met Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram in New Delhi this Friday. He demanded the Centre release pending scholarship cash for the state’s tribal students immediately. Students rely on this money to pay for their education. Any delay causes real hardship.

Sangma insisted the government send the total outstanding amount in a single lump sum. He argued this approach cuts down on student anxiety. "He said a one-time release would help reduce uncertainty among students who are awaiting financial assistance and ensure greater clarity over the availability of scholarship support."

The Speaker also moved forward with infrastructure plans for the state. He handed Oram the proposal and Detailed Project Report for the second phase of the New Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Officials kept quiet on the specific budget, project timeline, and funding breakdown for the complex. The two men focused the meeting on both student welfare and the future of the new Assembly site.
