Shillong: The Committee on Public Undertakings of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is hunting down a 29 crore rupee debt. They want a report on CMJ Breweries Pvt. Ltd. by Thursday. The Byrnihat-based brewer originally took a 61.94 crore rupee loan. They paid back 23.98 crore, but the balance remains unpaid. The repayment window closes in August 2026. The Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation says it is ramping up collection efforts.
Lawmakers also reviewed loans for Greystone Smelters and Greystone Strips Limited. The MIDC Board wrote off these debts in September 2025. Committee members clarified that a write-off is not a waiver. They told both firms to pay up within one week. Meanwhile, Aura Hotels and Resorts Pvt. Ltd. cleared its full 51 crore rupee loan. Badhok Nongmalieh Ford Dealer settled its debt by handing over a 4,322,000 square foot property in the Ri-Bhoi district.
The panel shifted focus to the Comptroller and Auditor General report from March 31, 2022. They flagged serious problems with the SAUBHAGYA and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana rural power schemes. Payments went out without mandatory insurance documents. The Power Department promised consequences. "Action would be initiated against officials found responsible," department representatives stated. The committee demanded a full report on these irregularities within one month.
Power shortages remain a major headache. Lawmakers grilled the department over a lack of transformers across the state. They demanded better supply chain management to stop grid failures. The committee will keep a close watch on all these files.
