Shillong: The Meghalaya ASHA Workers Union has formally asked the state government for land to build a transit home in Shillong. Union president Marajune Myrsing submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, requesting that the land be provided on a lease basis to better support frontline health workers.
ASHA workers act as vital links between rural communities and the healthcare system, managing responsibilities like immunizations, emergency responses, and maternal health. However, those traveling from remote districts to the capital for meetings and training sessions often struggle to find safe or affordable housing.
The union argues that a dedicated facility would alleviate the financial stress and safety concerns these workers face while attending official business in Shillong. Beyond the need for housing, the memorandum calls for a hike in fixed monthly incentives. Myrsing stated that current pay levels have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living and the increasing workload placed on grassroots health staff.
The union hopes these improvements will address the economic hardships of workers and bolster the effectiveness of healthcare delivery across the state.
