Shillong: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has officially approved the launch of an undergraduate degree programme in urban planning at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Tura. As a constituent college of Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), the institution is authorized to enroll 30 students for its inaugural batch beginning in the 2026 to 2027 academic session.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma lauded the decision as a significant milestone for the region. He emphasized that the programme will cultivate a skilled workforce dedicated to sustainable and planned development throughout Meghalaya. By offering this specialized curriculum locally, the initiative aims to reduce the necessity for students to seek professional education in urban and regional planning outside the state.

The introduction of this degree is particularly timely given the rapid expansion of towns such as Shillong and Tura, which necessitates better infrastructure management and structured growth. According to the official approval document issued on April 9, 2026, the programme will operate under the Eastern Region category and maintains a two year validity for finalizing affiliation and admission requirements.
