Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet gave the green light to upgrade the Orchid Resort in Mawkasiang to five-star status. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed the move on July 8. The project aims to boost tourism infrastructure and drive economic growth across the region.
New lease terms force the developer to drop a 5 crore rupee deposit. They must also fork over four percent of annual turnover to the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation. Officials expect the deal to pull in more private investment and create new jobs.
The Cabinet shifted focus to the Jal Jeevan Mission and the upcoming second phase of the water scheme. Sangma ordered the Public Health Engineering Department to file a deep-dive report on current tap connections. This audit will determine "how many are actually delivering water" to homes.
Teams will hunt for gaps in the network and explain why some connections failed. They plan to map out coverage across every block and district. The state must now settle its financial commitment for the second phase while sorting out the costs to retrofit existing supply schemes.
