Imphal: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have called for the immediate and unconditional release of 20 civilians held hostage following escalating Naga-Kuki tensions in Manipur. Reports indicate that six Naga men and 14 Kuki civilians have been in captivity since mid-May, creating significant distress for their families and communities.
In a letter dated June 1, Sangma appealed to the Kuki Inpi Manipur and the United Naga Council to prioritize the safety of the detainees. He emphasized that civilians unconnected to the conflict should not suffer, noting that such abductions only deepen communal divisions. The NPP leader offered to facilitate a transparent release process alongside civil society elders.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has also intervened, confirming he raised the disappearance of the six Naga men with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Rio stated that the central government has committed to prioritizing the search for the missing individuals and ensuring those responsible face justice. He urged the United Naga Council to assist in securing the freedom of the 14 Kuki civilians held by Naga volunteers to foster reconciliation.
The situation remains complex as Naga civil society organizations continue to demand updates on the missing men. While Naga groups acknowledge holding Kuki civilians and claim they are providing them with basic necessities, Kuki organizations maintain they have no information regarding the missing Nagas. Contradicting these claims, a witness statement recorded by Ukhrul Times features the wife of Dr. Manu, one of the missing Naga men, who described him being forcibly taken by armed individuals in her presence.
