Imphal: Manipur Police hauled in a massive cache of illegal weapons and grabbed a key militant this week. Officers caught 34-year-old Chandam Geetchandra Singh on July 3 in the Mantripukhri area. Singh is a member of the banned UNLF (P) group and allegedly worked as an extortionist. Police nabbed him while he stayed at the Reliance Trends building in Paona Bazar.

The crackdown continued through July 4 with two major weapons busts. Security forces scoured the hills near Mombi village in the Chandel district. They walked away with nine single-barrel rifles, two 9 mm pistols, improvised mortars, and a hand grenade along with 94 rounds of ammo.

A second team hit the Salungpham Uyok Ching hilltop in the Thoubal district the same day. This search turned up two Beretta pistols, a pair of .32 calibre pistols, and two single-barrel guns. Officers also seized 12 grenades and 1,242 rounds of ammunition. Police said: "further investigation is underway." Authorities are now working to trace the origins of these weapons.
