Imphal: Representatives from Manipur’s indigenous communities, including Meitei and Naga groups, gathered at Makhan Village for a Native Peoples’ Convention to address mounting security and demographic concerns. The participants reached a consensus to form a united front against what they describe as narco-terrorism and external aggression, citing these issues as primary threats to the region.
Key resolutions from the meeting include a formal demand for the central government to abrogate the Suspension of Operations agreement with armed groups. The assembly also called for the withdrawal of the Assam Rifles from the state and an immediate update of the National Register of Citizens to address long-standing population anxieties.
The event featured insights from experts, including K. Timothy Zimik, demographer Dr. R.K. Narendra, and academics Dr. Y. Premanda and Homen Thangjam. Moving forward, the newly formed Native Peoples’ Convention, Manipur plans to hold district-level consultations and arrange meetings with state legislators to advocate for policy changes. To maintain momentum, the group intends to establish a committee tasked with raising awareness about Manipur’s challenges among national and international audiences, while officially observing Native Peoples’ Day each year on June 2.
