Imphal: A group of senior journalists toured Karkinos Manipur Hospital at the JNIMS campus in Porompat. They aimed to get a better look at local cancer treatment options. The team included leaders from the Editors Guild of Manipur and the All Manipur Working Journalists Union.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Sapam Opendro guided the group through the facility. He explained that the hospital provides medical, surgical and radiation oncology under one roof. Patients no longer need to leave the state for complex care. Dr. Opendro stated, "The hospital offers medical, surgical and radiation oncology services, advanced diagnostics, chemotherapy, palliative care and multidisciplinary consultations."
The media delegation examined the diagnostic labs and met with the medical staff. They noted the facility helps close the healthcare gap in the region. Following the tour, the hospital and the media organizations agreed to host a free cancer screening event for journalists and their families in July 2026. This drive will prioritize early detection for oral, breast and cervical cancers.
M. Biswanath Sinha of Karkinos spoke for the Mumbai head office. He thanked the editors for their constructive engagement. The hospital plans to iron out details for additional treatment discounts for media staff in the coming weeks. Karkinos continues to push for better cancer awareness throughout Manipur.
