Imphal: Activists, students, and citizens packed Lamyanba Shanglen in Imphal to observe Anti-Repression Day 2026. They gathered to remember the struggle against state violence. The event, held at Konung Lampak, served as a platform to demand accountability and the immediate repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, known as AFSPA.
The Observation Committee, Anti-Repression Day 2026, organized the program to revisit the events of July 15, 2004. Twelve Manipuri women staged a nude protest outside Kangla Fort that day. They acted after the custodial killing of Thangjam Manorama shocked the region. This act of defiance drew global eyes and remains a powerful symbol of local resistance.
Attendees placed floral tributes for those lost in the state's long conflict. Speakers reflected on how the 2004 uprising exposed the deep anguish of the people. One speaker noted, "The sacrifice and courage displayed by the twelve mothers of Manipur continue to inspire the people's struggle for justice and human dignity."
Two decades have passed since that protest. Yet, many core issues remain frozen in time. Participants argued that lasting peace requires transparent investigations and a commitment to civil liberties. They urged authorities to reject force in favor of dialogue. The crowd ended the day with a formal pledge to keep fighting for fundamental rights and democratic values through peaceful action.
