Manipur Marks 25th Great June Uprising Day Amid Warnings of Renewed Unrest

Imphal: Manipur observed the 25th Great June Uprising Day at Kekrupat today to honor the 18 individuals who died during the 2001 mass protests to protect the state's territorial integrity. Organized by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation and the United Committee Manipur, the event brought together families, student groups, and civil society members for traditional rituals and floral tributes.

UCM General Secretary and observance co-convenor Santa Nahakpam criticized the lack of closure regarding the 2001 deaths, noting that the findings of a CBI inquiry were never disclosed. He drew parallels to the ongoing conflict starting in May 2023, urging the government to pursue justice for all victims. Nahakpam warned that a movement similar to the 2001 protests could return if the Government of India does not address concerns regarding separate administration and other constitutional demands. He stated, "The people of Manipur would continue to safeguard the state's territorial and administrative integrity."

BJP MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha Singh attended the ceremony and emphasized that unity remains the primary tool for overcoming the state's current challenges. He noted that national sacrifice brings a sense of immortality to the martyrs and serves as a call for continued public solidarity. MLA Sapam Nishikanta also participated, advocating for mutual trust and harmony among all communities to restore peace. The annual commemoration traces back to 2001, when protests erupted across Manipur following the extension of a ceasefire agreement with the NSCN-IM without specific territorial boundaries.
