Imphal: The Manipur High Court has ordered the state government to submit an Action Taken Report by Monday regarding the disappearance of six Naga civilians. The individuals were allegedly abducted by armed militants from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13 and have remained untraced for over three weeks.
The directive was issued during a hearing for a Public Interest Litigation filed by T. Mark Khapai, president of the Naga Lawyers Association. Represented by advocate D. Julius Riamei, the petition calls for judicial intervention to expedite search efforts and secure accountability for the missing persons.
Confusion emerged during the court proceedings after the state government indicated it had transferred the investigation to the National Investigation Agency. Commissioner-cum-Secretary for Home N. Ashok Kumar claimed the transfer was initiated to ensure an independent and transparent process. However, the Deputy Solicitor General of India stated the agency was “yet to receive any intimation from the State Government regarding the case of the six missing people allegedly abducted by armed militants.”
Chief Justice M. Sundar and Justice Ahanthem Bimol have now tasked the Chief Secretary of Manipur with filing a formal report detailing the investigation status and the actual progress of the NIA transfer. The matter is set for a follow-up hearing on June 8 to address the inconsistencies and verify the steps taken to locate the victims.
