Imphal: Manipur's primary supply artery is falling apart. The All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers’ Union is calling for an immediate overhaul of National Highway 37. Dangerous road conditions and frequent landslides have turned the Imphal to Silchar route into a gauntlet for commercial haulers.

Drivers face constant threats to their safety and cargo. Illegal collection points add financial strain to an already volatile route. Union President Sanasam Pratap Singh blamed the government for failing to maintain this strategic lifeline despite repeated warnings.

The monsoon season brings additional misery. Collapsing culverts and sliding earth frequently block traffic, stranding perishable goods for days. Singh noted that, "The highway has neither been constructed nor maintained to the required standards, making transportation increasingly risky."

The union wants the state to scrap unauthorized check-gates and tighten security. They are also asking local communities to stop interfering with supply trucks. Reliable transport remains the only way to keep the state economy afloat.
