Imphal: Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen expressed appreciation after the release of 14 Kuki detainees in Senapati District. The detainees, from Taphou Kuki Village, were held by the Naga Village Guard before their liberation was facilitated by the United Naga Council.
Kipgen thanked Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for their roles in the process. She also acknowledged the efforts of Naga civil society organizations and the Baptist World Alliance. Regarding the impact of the negotiations, she stated, "At a time marked by anxiety and uncertainty, their intervention has brought immense relief to the affected families and has reaffirmed the enduring strength of compassion and collective conscience in our society."
The United Naga Council clarified that the release followed appeals from church groups and tribal organizations. The council made the decision based on assurances from the Ministry of Home Affairs to locate missing Naga individuals and hold those responsible for their abduction accountable. The Manipur government further promised to intensify combing operations and enforce Suspension of Operation ground rules.
The release process involved extensive consultation among Naga leadership. Although an initial attempt to free the detainees occurred on June 1, 2026, the action was delayed due to local public sentiment. A formal decision to proceed was reached after an emergency meeting on June 6, 2026, involving the All Naga Students Association Manipur and the Naga Women Union.
