Manipur Civil Groups Denounce Alleged Assam Rifles Force Against Protesters

Imphal: A coalition of five civil society groups in Manipur has condemned the alleged use of force by Assam Rifles personnel against residents protesting a military outpost in Ukhrul district. The groups raised alarms over reports that women and students sustained injuries during a security operation at New Heaven and Finch Corner in Shangshak on June 7.

The joint statement came from LUP Manga, a conglomerate consisting of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibee Apunba Manipur, All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association, the Committee on Human Rights, and the Manipuri Students’ Federation. These organizations questioned the conduct of security forces who are officially tasked with civilian protection.

The signatories demanded accountability and a full explanation from authorities regarding the specific circumstances that led to the violence. "Calling for accountability and transparency, the organisations urged the authorities to thoroughly examine the incident and provide a clear explanation regarding the circumstances that led to the reported use of force," the statement noted.

The document was signed by AMUCO president and LUP Manga convenor Sanjoy Sorokhaibam, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam, PLMPAM president Soraisam Memcha, AMAWOVA president Y. Kunjarani, and MSF president Hijam Roshan.
