Imphal: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh advocated for a shift toward organic farming during the State Krishi Mela 2026 in Imphal. Speaking at the City Convention Centre, he emphasized the need to move away from chemical fertilizers, which he described as hazardous to human health. While acknowledging that a complete transition cannot happen overnight, he urged a gradual reduction in chemical reliance to better align with national agricultural goals.
To support this transition, the Agriculture Department is designating 400 hectares of land specifically for organic production. The Chief Minister also encouraged local farmers to adopt double and triple-cropping methods to boost productivity and economic growth. During the event, he officially launched the Manipur Seed and Organic Certification Agency to provide better oversight for the sector.
Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor of the Central Agricultural University, highlighted the importance of soil health for agricultural success. He stated, "Balanced use of fertilizers is essential for maintaining the soil fertility, reducing the cultivation cost and ensuring mass crop production."
Addressing logistical concerns, the Chief Minister promised to investigate the distribution of urea to ensure it reaches the public effectively, noting that he would personally intervene to address any reported lapses. The programme also featured the release of a magazine detailing success stories from 53 local farmers and the distribution of certificates for those practicing natural farming techniques.
