Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called for unified public cooperation to achieve lasting peace in the state. Speaking at the 8th Foundation Day celebration of the Chingamakha Nambul Mapal Development Committee in Imphal, the Chief Minister highlighted recent progress in conflict-hit regions but warned that stability remains fragile.
Reflecting on visits to Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Senapati, and Ukhrul, Singh noted signs of reconciliation among various groups. He specifically pointed to Jiribam, where members of the Kuki, Paite, Hmar, and Meitei communities have begun living together and sharing meals. The Chief Minister described his own experience participating in these local gatherings, stating he had personally interacted with and shared a meal with members of the various communities.
Despite these positive developments, the Chief Minister expressed deep concern over a recent bomb blast in Tronglaobi. The incident resulted in the deaths of two children and serious injuries to their mother, marking a significant setback to regional peace efforts. Singh suggested that some individuals continue to oppose stability because they derive personal benefits from the ongoing turmoil.
The state has faced ongoing tensions since clashes broke out on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The situation further complicated earlier this year with the emergence of conflicts between the Kuki and Naga communities. During the event, the Chief Minister also recognized the academic achievements of local students and encouraged residents to focus on community cleanliness.
