Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated on June 17 that persistent violence in the region is obstructing government development efforts. He alleged that certain groups are intentionally working to block peace, claiming these individuals prioritize profit over the stability of the state.
Addressing an event in Imphal West district, Singh noted that his administration has been forced to prioritize law and order over planned infrastructure projects. “After I became chief minister, there has been a series of unrest. We are occupied in resolving those, making it hard to focus on development activities. Nevertheless, we can't run away from our duties,” he said.
The Chief Minister detailed his efforts to foster reconciliation through visits to conflict zones like Jiribam and Ukhrul, where he met with leaders from the Kuki, Meitei, Paite, and Tangkhul Naga communities. Despite these appeals, violence has continued, including a recent bombing in the Bishnupur district that killed two children. Singh also highlighted an ambush in Ukhrul that occurred while he was meeting with local villagers to urge peace.
Since May 2023, ethnic clashes in Manipur have resulted in at least 260 deaths and widespread displacement. The state remains under intense security pressure, with recent operations uncovering the bodies of six Naga men following the release of 14 kidnapped Kuki individuals. Singh, who assumed office on February 4 after serving as the Legislative Assembly Speaker, called for the identification of those obstructing public movement and peace efforts.
