Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has welcomed the formation of a high-level central committee tasked with studying demographic shifts in border states. Singh described the initiative as a historic move and pledged the full support of his government to help the panel address concerns regarding illegal immigration and border integrity.

The committee is chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Shrivastava. Other members include Census Commissioner Durga Shankar Mishra, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava, and Dr. Shamika Ravi. Their work stems from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of a high-powered demography mission on August 15, 2025, which later received formal approval from the Union Cabinet on September 11.

The Chief Minister credited the federal government for taking decisive action on long-standing issues affecting the northeast. He specifically acknowledged the efforts of Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security risks posed by infiltration. According to the Chief Minister, the people of Manipur are grateful for these measures to safeguard national borders and stabilize local demographics.
