Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh announced a major commitment to upgrading the state police force this week. During a ceremony at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, he flagged off 477 new vehicles, which were acquired through the police modernization scheme to improve mobility and operational capacity.
The Chief Minister emphasized that a capable and well-equipped police force is essential for restoring stability. He acknowledged the role of local police alongside national agencies like the Army and Assam Rifles in managing the ongoing ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups. This conflict, which began in May 2023, has resulted in over 260 deaths and thousands of displacements.
During the event, Singh urged citizens to abandon violent protests. He pointed to recent unrest in the Bishnupur district, where demonstrators targeted security officers after the deaths of two children in a bombing. The Chief Minister stressed that peaceful dialogue is the only productive path forward.
Home Minister K Govindas Singh and various officials joined the Chief Minister to witness the vehicle rollout. The government remains focused on providing the necessary infrastructure to ensure law, order, and public safety across the state.
