Guwahati: Forest authorities at Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve have successfully engaged over 1,500 students in a new initiative designed to bridge the gap between local communities and wildlife preservation. Known as the Manas Mitra Programme, or Friends of Manas, the project focuses on teaching youth about the ecological significance of the regional landscape.

Field Director C Ramesh officially inaugurated the programme on November 14, 2024, at the Bansbari range to coincide with Children's Day. While the launch event marked a key milestone, the project has been active since February. During this time, officials conducted nature orientation sessions across 22 schools located in villages bordering the reserve.

These educational sessions aimed to foster a sense of responsibility toward wildlife protection among the next generation. To make the lessons memorable, organizers provided students with animal masks and customized pencils. By reaching 1,537 participants, the initiative seeks to ensure that residents living near the park remain active partners in ongoing conservation efforts.
