Imphal: Unidentified attackers killed 55-year-old Ngangkham Thambou and critically wounded his wife, Ngangkham Keinatombi, during a violent home invasion. The assault occurred at 2:30 am on Sunday at their residence in Keirao Wangkhem Mamang Leikai, Imphal East. Two men forced open the front door of the property.
Thambou, the son of the late Ngangkham Iboton, confronted the intruders as they moved toward the bedroom occupied by his children. A struggle broke out in the dark. One assailant fired a weapon, killing Thambou instantly.
The attackers then turned their weapons on his 52-year-old wife. They used a sharp-edged weapon to inflict severe wounds to her head and neck. After the attack, the suspects fled into the night. Emergency responders initially took Keinatombi to Shija Hospital in Langol. She was later moved to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences for advanced care. Doctors report her condition is critical.
The Additional Superintendent of Police for Imphal East, alongside the Irilbung Police Station team and forensic experts, processed the scene. They transferred the body to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Officials have launched a formal investigation into the murder, though a motive remains unknown.
Local residents expressed deep anger following the violence. They held a public meeting to organize a Joint Action Committee to pressure authorities for results. The committee declared they will not accept the body for burial until police apprehend the killers. The group stated, "The family would not accept Thambou’s body until the accused are apprehended." They set a deadline of July 22 for the arrest of the perpetrators.
