Imphal: Unidentified attackers stormed a residence in the Keirao Wangkhem locality of Imphal East at 2:30 am on Monday, July 20. Two intruders forced open the front door of the home belonging to 55-year-old Ngangkham Thambou. The victim, son of the late Ngangkham Iboton, died on the spot after being shot while confronting the gunmen as they attempted to reach his children's bedrooms.
The violence did not stop there. The attackers struck Thambou’s wife, 52-year-old Ngangkham Keinatombi, with a sharp weapon, leaving her with severe wounds to her head and neck. She was rushed to Shija Hospital in Langol before being moved to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences for emergency care. Her condition remains critical.
Police have launched an investigation. A team led by the Additional Superintendent of Police for Imphal East joined forces with the Irilbung Police Station and a forensic unit to process the crime scene. Thambou’s body is currently held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary for a post-mortem exam.
The attack triggered immediate local fury. Residents held a public meeting and formed a Joint Action Committee to force official action. The group issued an ultimatum: "The JAC has reportedly resolved not to claim the body unless the perpetrators are arrested by July 22." Investigators have registered a formal case but have yet to establish a clear motive for the raid.
