Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Bhutan, Tremors Felt in Sikkim and Bengal

Gangtok: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Punakha, Bhutan, late Sunday night, causing noticeable tremors across Sikkim and several districts in north Bengal. The United States Geological Survey recorded the seismic event at 11:06 pm.

Residents in Gangtok and across north Bengal districts, including Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, reported feeling the ground shake for several seconds. Many people quickly moved outdoors as a precautionary measure during the brief period of panic.

Government officials confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties or damage to property following the quake. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority stated that the situation remains under observation. Regarding the regional response, authorities noted, "The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority said the situation was being monitored."
