Kohima: Longsa village kicked off its Think Clean and Live Green campaign on July 4. The Longsa Government Employees Union and the Village Council teamed up to lead the event. Villagers gathered at the Cultural Hall before heading out to clear trash and plant trees across the area.
Special guest Nzano P Kikon of the Wokha Town Council joined the effort. Workers planted 92 saplings throughout the day. Kikon told the crowd that local sanitation efforts need to go further. She stated, "cleanliness should not be confined to individual households but must extend to the entire community."
Kikon pushed for better waste habits. She told residents to separate dry and wet trash at home. She also warned against the dangers of improper medical waste disposal. Stray dogs can drag hospital scraps into the streets, spreading disease. She specifically asked people to cut back on plastic bottles to keep the village safe.
Natural resources are under threat. The Etsuchukha water spring is drying up, a sign of local neglect. Kikon urged the village to guard their water sources. She reminded everyone that planting a tree is useless unless they keep it alive. Every villager must water and monitor the new saplings.
The union plans to run these work days every two months. They want every house to plant an ornamental tree to keep the village green. Keeping the initiative alive is the goal.
