Shillong: Laos Deputy Prime Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane and his wife, Vadsana Phomvihane, visited the Taj Mahal in Agra on Tuesday. The trip marks the Deputy Prime Minister's first official visit to India, following his arrival in New Delhi on Monday.
The visit comes as India and Laos celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations. On Wednesday, Phomvihane is scheduled to co-chair the 10th India-Laos Joint Commission Meeting alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the discussions aim to strengthen the longstanding partnership and deepen cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.
During his stay, Phomvihane will attend the India-Lao Business Forum and meet with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The two nations share deep historical and civilizational ties rooted in Buddhism and the Ramakien tradition.
India and Laos established diplomatic relations in 1956. High-level engagement remains a priority, building on previous discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith regarding increased trade and cultural exchange.
