Imphal: Heavy rainfall has triggered fresh landslides along National Highway-37, severing the primary road connection between Imphal and Silchar. The disruptions began early Tuesday morning at Awangkhul and worsened on Wednesday after mudslides struck the Barrack area, leaving hundreds of vehicles immobilized for the second consecutive day.

The stranded traffic includes oil tankers and trucks loaded with essential commodities destined for Imphal under security escort. Authorities report that the situation across Noney, Tamenglong, and Jiribam districts remains difficult as cleanup crews work to reopen the route. According to officials, "trucks in the Barrack area were being assisted by JCB machines to navigate portions of the affected stretch," while restoration efforts continue at multiple slide sites.

This closure compounds existing logistical challenges in the region, as the alternative Imphal-Dimapur route remains blocked by an ongoing indefinite economic strike led by tribal organisations. Personnel from the road construction firm ABCI are working alongside security forces to clear debris and restore the critical supply chain as quickly as possible.
