Imphal: Kuki-Zo volunteers detained two Meitei men after they entered the Gamgiphai buffer zone shortly after midnight on August 1. The men, identified as Junia Shyam and Rajesh Heisnam of Singjamei, Imphal, were intercepted while driving a Maruti van marked as a school vehicle. Volunteers claimed the pair appeared intoxicated during the stop.
The men told volunteers they were driving to Senapati. Following the detention, the group took the duo to Saparmeina Police Station. Police took custody of the pair for investigation. Authorities must now determine if the men violated security protocols in the area, which was established in May 2023 to separate warring communities.
This capture highlights lingering friction. It happened as Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with Zomi community representatives at his official bungalow in Imphal. Observers note the irony of the event. The continued use of community-controlled checkpoints forces a hard look at local stability. One report noted the detention of civilians by non-state actors highlights "the challenges facing the restoration of the rule of law in conflict-affected areas of Manipur."
